Santorini is world-renowned for its dramatic cliffs and breathtaking sunsets, but behind the postcard-perfect views lies a rich history of community, vision, and extraordinary generosity. On Tuesday, May 5th, the feast day of Saint Irene, the island’s beloved patron saint, the heart of Fira beat with a special sense of pride and gratitude.
In a moving ceremony held in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Loula & Evangelos Nomikos Foundation, in collaboration with the Municipality of Thera, unveiled the bronze busts of the island’s greatest benefactors: Evangelos and Loula Nomikos.

A Vision That Changed Santorini Forever
It is hard to imagine Santorini today without its iconic cable car. Yet, 45 years ago, scaling the cliffs from the port to Fira was a much more arduous task. The Nomikos family didn’t just build a means of transport; they built a bridge to the future.
The Santorini Cable Car remains a landmark project that transformed the island’s tourism landscape and economy. But the family’s legacy goes far beyond engineering. The Foundation continues to be a pillar of the local community, funding vital public works and supporting the health and well-being of the inhabitants.
Art Meets History
The task of bringing the likeness of the benefactors to life was entrusted to the talented sculptor Eleni Kolaitou. Working for over a year and a half using only two archival photographs, Kolaitou managed to capture not just their physical forms, but the spirit of their contribution.
Standing prominently in Fira, these statues serve as a permanent reminder to both locals and visitors of what can be achieved through selfless devotion to one’s home.
A Ceremony of High Emotion
The event was attended by distinguished guests, including His Eminence Metropolitan Amfilochios, the Mayor of Thera Nikos Zorzos, and various regional officials and MPs. However, the most poignant moment of the evening happened in the sky.
As the ceremony unfolded, the Foundation’s air ambulance performed several flyovers above Santorini. It was a powerful, symbolic reminder that the Nomikos legacy isn’t just written in bronze or stone, it is active every day, saving lives and providing essential healthcare transport for the people of the Cyclades.
The evening drew to a close with a soulful musical performance by Sokratis Charis, Marios Stavrakis, Vicky Stathopoulou, and Konstantinos Thravalos, leaving everyone present with a deep sense of connection to the island’s history.
