Athina Luxury Suites, part of Aestian Hospitality, is proud to support the Santorini Experience 2026, the iconic open water and trail running event taking place October 16-18 in Santorini, Greece.
There are very few places on earth where an athletic event can begin at an active volcano. Santorini is one of them, and the Santorini Experience has been making that happen every year since its founding. This October, the race enters its 12th edition, and Athina Luxury Suites, part of Aestian Hospitality, is honored to be among the official Hospitality Sponsors of one of Greece’s most remarkable sporting weekends.
From October 16 to 18, 2026, athletes from across the world will gather on the island of Santorini to compete across two of the most visually and physically extraordinary courses in international sports. The event is co-organized by the Municipality of Thera, the Department of Sports and Culture, and Active Media Group, and it draws participants and spectators from dozens of countries each year.
Swimming from the Volcano: The 2.4km Open Water Race
On Saturday, October 17, the centerpiece of the weekend takes place on the water. Swimmers will enter the Caldera from the Volcano itself and finish at the Old Port of Fira, crossing 2.4 kilometers of the deep, thermal waters that define this part of the southern Aegean. It is a route unlike any other in competitive open water swimming: geologically ancient, visually overwhelming, and physically demanding in equal measure.
Safety throughout the swim is coordinated by the Santorini Boatmen’s Association, with rescue vessels positioned along the course and mandatory use of safety buoys for all participants. Organizers will also provide complimentary cable car access up and down the Fira cliffs upon presentation of a race confirmation, making the logistics of the day as seamless as possible for athletes.

Running the Island: The 15km Volcanic Trail
Sunday, October 18 belongs to the runners. The 15K Trail Run starts at the Desalination Plant and moves through some of the most demanding volcanic terrain on the island. The course winds along narrow Caldera paths, crosses traditional cobblestone trails, climbs and descends through significant elevation changes, and opens onto panoramic passages with uninterrupted views of the Aegean Sea.
The combination of volcanic rock underfoot and the scale of the landscape above makes this one of the most distinctive trail running courses in all of Europe. For athletes who have run in the Cyclades, in the Greek islands, or in Mediterranean trail events more broadly, the Santorini 15K stands in a category of its own.

The Sunset Party: October 17 at the Caldera
Beyond the racing itself, the Santorini Experience Sunset Party has grown into one of the signature social moments of the autumn calendar on the island. On the afternoon of Saturday, October 17, internationally recognized DJ Vasilis Tsilichristos will perform a live set against the backdrop of the Caldera at sunset. Entry is free and open to athletes, island residents, and visitors alike. Aestian Hospitality, together with Athina Luxury Suites, is among the proud supporting partners of the event.
