Santorini has always been known for its breathtaking caldera views, volcanic beaches, and luxurious hospitality. But in 2025, the island welcomes a new jewel that will elevate its position as a cultural tourism destination in the Mediterranean — the fully renovated Archaeological Museum of Thira.
Just a short distance from Athina Luxury Suites, in the heart of Fira, this iconic museum reopens its doors, inviting visitors to explore the island’s rich ancient past through a modern, immersive lens.
A New Era for Cultural Tourism in Santorini
Inaugurated by Greece’s Minister of Culture, Ms. Lina Mendoni, the new Archaeological Museum of Thira is more than just a renovated building — it’s a symbol of Santorini’s cultural rebirth. This landmark project, part of the Ministry’s national strategy for cultural development, brings together state-of-the-art museology, timeless Greek heritage, and accessibility for all.
The project includes:
- Structural upgrades to meet modern safety and seismic standards
- Energy-efficient systems and enhanced lighting
- Full accessibility for people with disabilities
- Contemporary museographic design and visitor-friendly infrastructure
Meet the Kore of Thira: A Majestic Ancient Masterpiece
At the heart of the museum lies its emblematic exhibit — the Kore of Thira, a 2.48-meter-tall archaic marble statue dating back to the 7th–6th century BC. Sculpted from Naxian marble and discovered in 2000 in Ancient Thira’s necropolis, this nearly intact statue had been hidden from the public for over two decades.
Now displayed on a custom-designed anti-seismic base — developed in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens and the Acropolis Museum’s conservation team — the Kore of Thira finally receives the spotlight she deserves. Her presence not only enriches the museum but embodies the dynamic spirit of ancient Thira.
“Cycladic Women” Exhibition: Stories Through a Female Lens
To mark the reopening, the museum also hosts the powerful exhibition “Cycladic Women: Untold Stories of the Cyclades”, curated in collaboration with the Museum of Cycladic Art. This is the first pan-Cycladic, diachronic exhibition ever organized in the region.
Through rare artifacts, personal stories, and powerful imagery, the exhibition traces the evolving role of women in Cycladic society from prehistory to post-Byzantine times — exploring themes of identity, equality, and empowerment.
Highlights include:
- Cycladic figurines and vessels never before exhibited on the islands
- Artifacts from Santorini’s own archaeological treasures
- A contemporary layout that bridges ancient past and modern relevance
